Our latest video offering is a live performance, of Performance, from Happy Mondays. This is a recording from Tony Wilson's show The Other Side of Midnight. You will witness Shaun managing to pull off the Deirdre Barlow look, some freaky dancin' from Bez and a classic from Happy Mondays.
Our second monthly mix, M002, is centred around the classic album Computer World by Kraftwerk. Released in 1981, it was their 8th album and our own personal favourite. Our mix keeps with an electro feel throughout with some krautrock thrown in for good measure. If you want to read more about the mix it's explained in more detail at the end of this post.
Our guest mix this month is from Glasgow's Jim 'Discomix' Watson. Jim's mixes over the years have been loved by us at melange.fm and we always look forward to hearing them when they arrive. This mix is no exception, it starts with a nice chilled groove and just keeps getting funkier. Jim's mixes are a journey into the underground funk and soul records from the 60's and 70's. They are as educational as they are enjoyable. This mix opened our eyes to some tracks we've never heard before including a superb track called Earthquake by Brand New. Get on it!

M002 kicks off with Computer Love and then into a more recent electronic track, Idioteque by Radiohead. The mix then flows into a more ambient electronic sound before moving into krautrock. Krautrock is the term given to a style of music coming out of Germany in the late 60's and 70's. It's recognisable by the 4/4 drumming style and almost electronic style repetition of riffs and beats. We play a track by a band called Neu! who were formed by ex-members of Kraftwerk, Klaus Dinger and Michael Rother. In recent years there have been a few bands emerging who are heavily influence by the krautrock sound. We feature a few tracks with the more recent take on krautrock from The Early Years, The Oscillation and Death In Vegas. The mix then returns to electronic music showing how Kraftwerks blueprint has evolved. The mix ends with probably the best two tracks back to back on any album, Numbers into Computer World 2. It shows how timeless these tracks are and how fresh they sound against modern electronic music.
We also came across this great interview with Juan Atkins over at Bleep43. A true pioneer, Juan Atkins is one of the most important figures in electronic music and it's very rare to hear such a detailed and honest interview with him. Click the link below for the interview.
After yet another essential release from Peanut Butter Wolf's mighty Stones Throw Records, in the shape of the new LP by Mayer Hawthorne titled A Strange Arrangement, we found ourselves going back to our own Stones Throw collection. We realised, once again, how good it was! On the back of this, we thought it would be a good idea to record a short mix of the more funkier, soulful and boogie based releases. A short summary of the mix and details on the music featured can be found after the track listing.

The mix starts with a song from a bonus record that came with the A Strange Arrangement LP. Dap Walk, Southside Funk & Tresspasser are all from a compliation called The Funky 16 Corners feauturing lesser known 60's & 70's funk. Next comes a song by Dam-Funk from the Rhythm Trax Vol. 4 album, another of the songs from this album appears later in the mix. Next up is James Pants. We have taken songs from his must have album Welcome. Then we play a track from Koushik taken from the album Out My Window. Our final featured artist is the legendary J Dilla with tracks from his last album Donuts. ***If you click on the artist's name in the text above it will take you to a page giving you more info about them.
