The mix for this month came from an idea on a hazy Sunday afternoon at Melange HQ. We approached the mix with the idea of having three layers. The first being a background of ambient works. The second, short snippets of chilled tracks. Finally, a third layer of random vocal samples from documentaries and other weird stuff we've seen or heard. It's essential listening for those monged out moments.

Our guest mix this month comes all the way from Italy, courtesy of SirBilly. The mix is a blend of New Wave, Synthpop and Italo Disco. It features edits and remixes by SirBilly. This month's mix is upbeat from the off. It's a mix of disco, minimal techno, house and electronica. We had the idea of doing the mix to stick on your headphones when in the gym or going for a run. But it works equally well listening to it sat on your couch eating jaffa cakes.

Sucker For A Chilled Out Space [M006]

This month's mix kicks off with what's being labelled as chillwave (or glo-fi/twee-fi depending on what you read). You'll know Neon Indian from our 'Best Albums of 2009' mix. Another album worth getting is Causers of This by Toro Y Moi which was released this year.

We move into a bit of Scandinavian space disco and some funky disco with a couple of epics from Studio and Lindstrøm. Later on in the mix we feature a song by Trus'me called Sucker For A Pretty Face. This is re-working of West Phillips song, which by sheer coincidence features in this month's guest mix. The Trus'me album In The Red would have made the 'Best Albums of 2009' list but it was released in December and we hadn't got our mitts on it by the time of the mix. It's well worth investing in a copy.

...then the alcohol then started to take hold and we end on a bit of 80's electronic music. We had a good laugh doing this mix and we hope you enjoy it.

The guest mix for this month is from Jammiwam. Those of you who followed us from day one...or were interested enough to scroll through the old mixes...will know he provided us with our first guest mix. The mix is made up of disco edits, deep house and some dubstep. Those of you in Edinburgh will know Jammiwam from the club night Jam The Box at the GRV. Jam The Box have put on some great nights since starting up, playing a healthy mix of techno, disco, house, funk, dubstep and anything else in between. They also have Jam The Box Goes Live where they showcase some of the best local bands. Their next night is on Sat 6th March at the GRV. This will feature Mark Archer (ex Altern8) and the AGT Rave Cru. Get your Vicks and get down!

This months mix is a mixed bag of soul, funk, garage rock, electronica and disco. We start off with a classic from Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes. This is because the lead singer (no not Harold Melvin as you might think) Teddy Pendergrass died earlier this month.

We also feature a track off the superb new Lindstrøm & Christabelle album Real Life Is No Cool. This album is well worth getting your hands on!

Our guest mix this month is from Dublin's Pete Dancer. Pete's currently loving the sort of tunes out on Eskimo and Permanent Vacation. His favourite DJ's at the moment are Prins Thomas and Lindstrøm. Pete's mix is a top blend of deep house and disco. We're sure you'll love it as much as us.

For this month's mix, we are getting stuck into a bit of punk but in usual melange fashion we wander into a few other genres. It's a healthy mix of punk, post-punk, punk-funk, new wave and electro disco.

Our guest mix this month is from Chef De Party. Chef serves up a superb mix taking the Melange ethic of playing a wide mix of tunes. It was Chef's first time trying out CDJ's after being a vinyl purist for 16 years! I think you'll agree he's nailed the CDJ's as his mix is smooth as fuck. Chef also has a blog called The Chef's Specials but after his move to Glasgow he's been a bit too busy to update it. Watch this space!

Our second monthly mix, M002, is centred around the classic album Computer World by Kraftwerk. Released in 1981, it was their 8th album and our own personal favourite. Our mix keeps with an electro feel throughout with some krautrock thrown in for good measure. If you want to read more about the mix it's explained in more detail at the end of this post.

Our guest mix this month is from Glasgow's Jim 'Discomix' Watson. Jim's mixes over the years have been loved by us at melange.fm and we always look forward to hearing them when they arrive. This mix is no exception, it starts with a nice chilled groove and just keeps getting funkier. Jim's mixes are a journey into the underground funk and soul records from the 60's and 70's. They are as educational as they are enjoyable. This mix opened our eyes to some tracks we've never heard before including a superb track called Earthquake by Brand New. Get on it!

M002 kicks off with Computer Love and then into a more recent electronic track, Idioteque by Radiohead. The mix then flows into a more ambient electronic sound before moving into krautrock. Krautrock is the term given to a style of music coming out of Germany in the late 60's and 70's. It's recognisable by the 4/4 drumming style and almost electronic style repetition of riffs and beats. We play a track by a band called Neu! who were formed by ex-members of Kraftwerk, Klaus Dinger and Michael Rother. In recent years there have been a few bands emerging who are heavily influence by the krautrock sound. We feature a few tracks with the more recent take on krautrock from The Early Years, The Oscillation and Death In Vegas. The mix then returns to electronic music showing how Kraftwerks blueprint has evolved. The mix ends with probably the best two tracks back to back on any album, Numbers into Computer World 2. It shows how timeless these tracks are and how fresh they sound against modern electronic music.
